Exploring Indigo and Shibori with Aaron Sanders Head
Saturday, August 29th 1pm-5pm, VIRTUALLY!
Join us for a workshop with Aaron Sanders Head to explore indigo and shibori. The four hour course will teach you how to dye natural fiber goods in a plant derived indigo vat as well as the basics of Itajime (shape resist), Kumo (twist resist) shibori dyeing, and other shibori techniques.
A materials kit will be sent to participants ahead of time. You will set up at home (or another location of your choice) and connect via Zoom for the workshop itself.
The kit will include:
-dye
-1 yard fabric
-rubber bands
-wooden shapes
-instructions on how to set up your vat
Participants will need to have the following available:
-a flat surface to work on (covered or something that can get dye on it, can be the ground if comfortable)
-a water source or bucket of water
-5 gallon bucket with lid to use as a vat (or another lidded container of similar size)
-stirring tool such as a paint stick
-rubber dishwashing gloves
-small homegoods or clothing to dye* Prewash in hot water before the workshop.
-(optional) small items for shape dying (further details will be provided in advance)
Plan to wear old clothes and shoes as the dye will splash.
*Cellulose fibers (cotton, linen, rayon, ramie) accept the color the best. Vintage linens, pillow cases, dishtowels and clothing are all perfect for this. Regular quilting cotton (including prints) can be used.
One vat can dye 12-15 yards of fabric and, with proper care, a vat can be used for ~1 week.
