2025 Skill Builders and Challenge

Picture
                                             A Skill Building Exercise

In response to member requests for skill building and some members that are new to quilting, we are running a Block Lotto Skill Building activity in 2025. In short, a block lotto means that if you make the required block and bring it to the next meeting, your name is placed in a drawing and the winner takes home all the blocks made for that period. You do NOT have to participate in all six block styles. You can choose to participate once, twice, or all six times.

A new block will be announced semi-monthly for a total of six different block styles. Sometimes it will just be the skill building block, as in the January/February challenge. Other times it will be a skill building block used in another block. Missed the meeting? Click on the link to get the instructions for the next block.

January/February: Half Square Triangles
March/April: 16 Patch
May/June: Flying Geese
July/August: Improv Trees  10.5" unfinished
September/October: Freehand Landscape Hills
November/December: Disappearing 9 Patch

                             Something Old, Nothing New Challenge

Our first challenge for 2025 is called "Something Old, Something Blue, Something Borrowed, and Nothing New".

In this challenge, members will start a project using fabric or orphan blocks already in their stash (no need to go to the fabric store this time). Participants can make a mini, a bag, a jacket, or whatever you want!

Participants will start the project, then midway through the challenge, will pass their project on to their swap partner who will embellish or add to the item.

For example, if you have an old blue jean jacket in your closet, you can add fabric to the back or sleeves, then midway through the project, swap with your partner who may wish to embellish the jacket with additional fabric, embroidery or sashiko stitching. Completed projects will be revealed at the September meeting.

Participants will be randomly assigned a partner. What a great way to meet another guild member and share our love of creating!

As an added benefit, we would love to use these items in our annual auction but understand if you couldn't part with your creation.

The Challenge will start in April and the reveal will be at the September meeting.

Challenge Guidelines

During the course of the year, the guild will issue six skill building projects (block lotto) and one challenge. The goal of the challenges is two fold, firstly to challenge members to stretch their sewing skills and try something new. Secondly, we invite members to donate their challenge makes to our annual auction. This gives you the freedom to create without worrying about it being "your style" or what to do with it afterward and helps support our guild fundraiser.

For each challenge, we ask that you make one of the following types of items:
Picture

A mini quilt (18" x 18") or smaller, with some provision for hanging.
Picture

A mug rug (10" x 6" or smaller), made to be washable and used as an extra large coaster for a drink and a snack.

A small, giftable item or set of items (ex drawstring bags, zip pouches, set of coasters, placemats, etc).
Hanging options to consider include:
  • Triangle Pocket Tutorial
  • Hidden Tab Tutorial
  • Exposed Tab Tutorial
  • Hanging Sleeve Tutorial
