The RCMQG General Meeting was called to order by Amanda Conger, President, at 6:04 PM. A total of 16 members were present; 8 members in-person and 8 members via Zoom. New members and existing members were introduced.
Using Tory Padden’s August meeting fabric postcard presentation as inspiration, guild members worked on a fabric postcard design challenge. Postcards completed by the October meeting will be judged for a People’s Choice award. Amanda reviewed future retreat dates for 2024 (Thursday, August 1st to Monday, August 5th), and for 2025 (Wednesday, August 13th to Monday, August 18th). Both retreats will be held at Place of Grace in Clarkrange, Tennessee. Sewcial Saturdays will be returning to in-person meetings beginning in January. Meetings will be held at the Community Room at the North Huntsville Library (Sparkman and Pulaski) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Danica reviewed current events with The Modern Quilt Guild, noting the following: (i) QuiltCon volunteer sign-ups are open; (ii) the MQG 8th Annual Mini-Swap sign-ups are open; (iii) QuiltCon quilt submissions are open until October 31st; (iv) faculty applications for QuiltCon 2025 in Phoenix are open until January 31, 2024; (v) there are new on-demand educational videos; and (vi) there are new print on-demand books available. Amanda reviewed the upcoming guild events, including: (i) the Sewcial Saturday on October 14th; (ii) RCMQG General Meeting on October 17th; (iii) Board elections on November 19th to 25th; (iv) the online fundraising auction on November 27th to December 3rd; and (v) the 2024 Board planning retreat on January 5-7, 2024. Amanda reminded members to submit items for the November auction. Volunteers are still needed to photograph and track the auction items as they are submitted, as well as write descriptions for the auction items. Amanda provided a recap of the Celebrate Quilting event noting several new inquiries about joining the guild and Debby Lee won the raffle quilt. Sew & Tell presentation was shown. Tory Padden, a costume designer with over 40 years experience, presented an introduction to fabric postcards. Postcard design elements were reviewed, including, size, foundation/fillers, design elements, backing, and finishing touches. Amanda noted positive feedback from participants in the serger workshop. Additional classes in 2024 will be scheduled. Danica reviewed current events with The Modern Quilt Guild, noting that QuiltCon registration is open, the conference hotels are sold out. Members were reminded that even if you are not planning to attend QuiltCon, you should still register for the show pass as this will allow you to download the QuiltCon app to see all the quilts in the show. Danica advised that while the lectures will not be online, the award show will be live-streamed. Amanda reviewed the upcoming guild events, including: (i) September 9th - Sewing Saturday via Zoom; (ii) September 16th - Celebrate Quilting at the Richard Showers Community Center; and (iii) September 19th - General Meeting. Amanda provided further information about the Celebrate Quilting event, including discussing the need for members to volunteer to assist the day of the event or prior to the event by displaying advertising. Finally, at the September General Meeting, members were advised to bring supplies, or have them available, to make a fabric postcard based on Tory’s presentation. Amanda noted that members may start getting items ready for the November auction. A volunteer is needed to photograph and track the auction times as they are submitted. Pam noted that the final set of questions for the Secret Stitcher program have been distributed; members should mail their member make by September 30th. Amanda announced the UFO Glow Up Challenge. Members are to take an orphan block or a UFO to finish into an item to donate to the auction. Items will be revealed at the October meeting. In addition, the September 9th Sewing Saturday will focus on the UFO Glow Up as a theme. Sew & Tell presentation was shown. Figo/Northcott Fabrics sent many fabric donations, most notably panels for Alabama and Georgia if members are interested in sewing these. The meeting adjourned at 7:20 PM. Debby Lee lead a presentation on Quilter’s Quiz, an acronym game of all things quilting. Paula Newquist correctly guessed 17 of the 25 acronyms. Amanda announced the guild raise $795.80 from the June Sew-Signment sale! Pam Casey noted that the insurance premium has been paid. The guild now has general liability insurance through The Hartford, effective June 1, 2023. Members should see Pam or Beverly Keyser should a claim need to be filed. The Pensacola MQG swap was completed with members joining in a show and tell of the mini’s swapped. Amanda indicated that due to low interest, the guild will not participate in the 2024 MQG QuiltCon Challenge Quilt. The guild will revisit the issue for the 2025 QuiltCon. Amanda reviewed current events with The Modern Quilt Guild, including the July inspiration colors; the MQG Sew Along of the Criss Cross Chain pattern which ends on August 10th; the Make a Difference Challenge with a theme of biodiversity; and QuiltCon 2024, including available scholarships, workshops and lectures, and registration information which opens on August 15th. Amanda reviewed the upcoming guild events, including: (i) Introduction to Serging Workshop on July 29th; (ii) the RCMQG Retreat on August 11th - 13th; (iii) the General Meeting on August 15th with a presentation on Fabric Postcards by Tory Padden; and (iv) Celebrate Quilting on September 16th. Amanda reminded members to review the volunteer opportunities, noting we always have community outreach projects that need attending to, assistance is needed for the retreat, and a volunteer is needed to photograph and tack the Auction items as they are submitted. Pam noted that the third set of Secret Stitcher questions has been mailed out. Pam presented the Potluck Party Challenge reveal. Items made for this challenge may be donated to the guild for the Annual Auction. The participation prize drawing was won by Linda Hornsby. Sew & Tell presentation was shown. Ben Darby, a member of the Heritage Quilters of Huntsville guild, presented a trunk show of his award winning quilts. Notable quilts included the Ode to Joy quilt, the Space Quilt, the Word Quilt and the memory quilt made from his father’s pajamas and shirts. Pam discussed the Board’s proposal to take $400 from the guild savings account to pay for Business Liability insurance. This will be a recurring annual cost to the guild which will be factored into future budgets. The insurance is designed to protect and defend the guild from covered claims alleging that the guild damaged someone’s property, injured them or defamed them. The members voted unanimously to purchase the insurance. Amanda provided information on the upcoming Introduction to Serging Workshop to be held at Calico Cove on July 29th, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at a cost of $125 for members. Pam discussed the Celebrate Quilting Community event to be held in September. The raffle quilt tickets will be available at the Sew Signment sale; $1.00 for one entry; $5 for six entries. Amanda reminded members to respond to the MQG Challenge Quilt Survey. Only the first 80 quilts submitted will be accepted into the 2024 QuiltCon show. The guild will make a decision on participation based on the interest in the survey. The retreat logo is available on Zazzle for ordering on t-shirts, aprons, tote bags, etc. Members are reminded that it can take several weeks for the custom printed items to be received. Debby discussed the proposed workshop on designing a pictorial quilt to be taught by Paula Newquist. Members are to select an individual photograph to make a quilt. The RCMQG General Meeting was called to order by Amanda Conger, President, at 6:02 PM. A total of 14 members were present; 8 members in-person and 6 members via Zoom. We had 1 guest visiting from the Tacoma Modern Quilt Guild.
Beverly provided a program on Making Bias Binding. Beverly provided calculations for determining how much binding is needed. In addition, she noted that Lamb Art Press published a binding calculations card in 1985 that is still available today. Differences between bias binding and straight binding were demonstrated. Tips and tricks were noted such as not putting a binding seam in the quilt corner, sewing the bias strips together in random lengths, chain sewing the binding and ironing the seams open. Linda noted that quilts have been delivered to St. Jude and pillowcases are ready to be delivered this month to the North Alabama Foster Closet. Linda read a thank you note from St. Jude Clinic to the guild. Amanda noted that she is still looking for a location for the July serger workshop which will be capped at 7 people. Danica reviewed the various National MQG events such as the color palette inspirations, the Criss Cross Chain sew along, the Make A Difference Challenge with a theme of biodiversity. Danica noted it’s not too early to get excited about QuiltCon 2024 to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hotel rooms are now available and the workshops/lecture catalog will be released at the end of the month. Linda noted that we will have a Community Outreach Sewing Day on June 10th, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the Publix Community Room. Members are encouraged to attend and bring their machines and supplies to work on community outreach projects. We will also have Zoom available for those who are unable to attend in-person Amanda reminded members to review the volunteer opportunities, noting we always have community outreach projects that need attending to, we continue to look for potential buyers and sellers for the Sew-Signment Sale, and we need someone to rest and kit projects for the retreat. Amanda noted that the Mini Swap with the Pensacola Modern Quilt Guild is underway. A reminder that June 30th is the deadline to mail the Mini to your swap partner. Amanda noted that the Potluck Party Challenge reveal is in July. Members should be working on their auction items. Amanda noted that registration is open for members and non-members for the the Sew-Signment Sale to be held on June 24th at Innerspace Brewing. Members are encouraged to distribute fliers on community message boards. Amanda noted we are confirmed for September 16th at the Richard Showers Community Center for the Celebrate Quilting Community Event. Volunteers are needed to assist with giving a short presentation on quilting, providing a short demonstration on quilting techniques or assisting with various tasks of the day. Amanda announced the QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt Project will be slightly different than in years past. Only the first 80 quilts submitted will be accepted. The entry period opens October 15th and closes December 15th. There is a $25 fee to subsidize return shipping costs. This year’s theme is Symmetry.
