Beverly provided a program on Making Bias Binding. Beverly provided calculations for determining how much binding is needed. In addition, she noted that Lamb Art Press published a binding calculations card in 1985 that is still available today. Differences between bias binding and straight binding were demonstrated. Tips and tricks were noted such as not putting a binding seam in the quilt corner, sewing the bias strips together in random lengths, chain sewing the binding and ironing the seams open.
Linda noted that quilts have been delivered to St. Jude and pillowcases are ready to be delivered this month to the North Alabama Foster Closet. Linda read a thank you note from St. Jude Clinic to the guild.
Amanda noted that she is still looking for a location for the July serger workshop which will be capped at 7 people.
Danica reviewed the various National MQG events such as the color palette inspirations, the Criss Cross Chain sew along, the Make A Difference Challenge with a theme of biodiversity. Danica noted it’s not too early to get excited about QuiltCon 2024 to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hotel rooms are now available and the workshops/lecture catalog will be released at the end of the month.
Linda noted that we will have a Community Outreach Sewing Day on June 10th, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, at the Publix Community Room. Members are encouraged to attend and bring their machines and supplies to work on community outreach projects. We will also have Zoom available for those who are unable to attend in-person
Amanda reminded members to review the volunteer opportunities, noting we always have community outreach projects that need attending to, we continue to look for potential buyers and sellers for the Sew-Signment Sale, and we need someone to rest and kit projects for the retreat.
Amanda noted that the Mini Swap with the Pensacola Modern Quilt Guild is underway. A reminder that June 30th is the deadline to mail the Mini to your swap partner.
Amanda noted that the Potluck Party Challenge reveal is in July. Members should be working on their auction items.
Amanda noted that registration is open for members and non-members for the the Sew-Signment Sale to be held on June 24th at Innerspace Brewing. Members are encouraged to distribute fliers on community message boards.
Amanda noted we are confirmed for September 16th at the Richard Showers Community Center for the Celebrate Quilting Community Event. Volunteers are needed to assist with giving a short presentation on quilting, providing a short demonstration on quilting techniques or assisting with various tasks of the day.
Amanda announced the QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt Project will be slightly different than in years past. Only the first 80 quilts submitted will be accepted. The entry period opens October 15th and closes December 15th. There is a $25 fee to subsidize return shipping costs. This year’s theme is Symmetry. The guild will send out a poll to gauge interest in participation and leadership roles.
